THE PHILIPPINE CENTER Update – October 20, 2001 By Ely Suson
The Board of Trustees and officers of the PCCCF met for
the first time in April of the year 2000. Previously, we had a steering
committee which was, then, automatically dissolved. Since then events have
moved at a much faster pace.
At present we have two primary concerns. First, the
continuation of what we have and, second, the eventual construction of a
building to house our activities.
I.The continuation of the Philippine Center, as
it exists in its present location and with its present activities, is assured by
the following:
1] A charitable lead trust was
formed designating the Center as the beneficiary of an $8,000.00 grant yearly
for the next ten years if necessary.
2] A yearly donation of
$2,000.00 for ten years has been pledged by Joe Yamat, Jr. and Dain Rauscher
Company.
3] A yearly grant from the
Philippine Medical Association of Wisconsin is expected which was $5,000.00 in
1999, $8,000.00 in each of the years 2000 and 2001 (of which $3,000.00 yearly
was ear-marked for the Free Medical Clinic).
4] Also, a grant of $25,000.00
from Dain Rauscher is a possibility. Some paper work is necessary to obtain this
fund.
II.A fund-raising campaign is currently being
prepared. Expect receiving mail from us in the next three to four weeks. From
January 1999 to August of 2001 our fund-raising activities added $72,222.00 to
our coffers. This does not include the total donation of approximately
$10,000.00 for the chamber music concert in June 6, 2001.
On October 13, 2001, at the invitation of the Board of
Trustees and officers of the PCCCF, Dr. Ted Exconde, of Cleveland, Ohio,
addressed the annual meeting of the FAAWIS at the Philippine Center. Ted was
highly instrumental in the establishment of the Philippine Center in Parma,
Ohio. In the ensuing answer and question period we gained tremendous insight
into how to successfully build a Center.
Currently, negotiations are taking place between the PCCCF and the City of West Allis concerning the possible construction of a
center on a piece of property owned by the city between 72ndStreet
and National Ave. Preliminary discussions were conducted between
representatives of the PCCCF and Mayor Jeanette Bell and Director of Zoning and
Development Mr. John Stibal of West Allis.
